What is Newborn Photography?

Newborn Photography is the only genre of photography in which the  photographer is completely responsible for the safety and welfare of the model. That is why it is so important for a photographer to be trained to safely handle a newborn. Professional newborn baby photographers spend a significant amount of time during a session comforting, soothing, often even feed and cleaning up after their models. This is a time for the parents to sit back and enjoy the break, as a photographer works magic. Even though newborn photography can be challenging, it is also the most rewarding! Here are some tips for newborn photography that every photographer must keep in mind – 

  • Use of everyday objects – When you use objects of daily use in newborn photography, the exact ambiance of that time can be captured. A baby blanket is a very commonly used prop and, it can not only add considerable texture, but is very intimately related to the childhood of a baby which will hold greater meaning to the family. Some even choose to bring in monogrammed items, to create a custom set up. 
  • Always keep safety in mind – Photography doesn’t mean that you will put the baby at risk. Safety should always come first and a photographer should be trained to safely handle a newborn 
  • Involve the family – Newborn photography doesn’t always have to be with the baby as a single subject. This will be the first time the family will have special photos of their family as a whole. 
  • Encourage siblings to be involved in the newborn session. These are the sweetest memories and most often the most picked poses
  • Always prep your clients. A newborn session will always go much smoother, if the family is prepared for their newborn session. 
  • Make sure to maximize every pose by adding different textures to the set. You can also broaden a newborn gallery by offering different angles and distances.
  • One of the most important things is to relax and the baby will follow. 

A professional newborn photographer will make every pose look easy, but newborn photography is a very in-depth genre of photography and takes many years of training and practice. There are endless aspects at perfecting sessions and, even the simplest poses, can take lots of planning. Some may even require several pictures combine, these are called composites. Although newborn photography is a very challenging genre of photography, it is also one of the most gratifying. The joy you bring to families is immeasurable, as well as, providing them with fleeting moments in time that they will treasure for a lifetime.
